Macy’s partners with the National Recreation and Park Association to raise funds for local parks nationwide, with every dollar matched by Macy’s, up to $250,000
Flint, Michigan – March 5, 2014 – Genesee County Parks’ For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum has been selected for “Heart Your Park,” a program introduced as part of Macy’s “Secret Garden” campaign that aims to raise awareness and dollars for local parks across the country. From March 7 to March 31, customers at Macy’s Genesee Valley Mall can donate $1 or more at the register, with 100 percent of the donations benefiting For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum. To further spread the love, Macy’s will match the total customer donation across all stores, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000 in total.
For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum is one of more than 550 parks nationwide that will benefit from Macy’s “Heart Your Park” this spring. In partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the national non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of community parks, recreation and conservation, Macy’s stores across the country have each selected a local park or green space in their community to support through the program. Donations will go toward making improvements, such as maintaining trails, playgrounds, and ball fields, and everything in between.
“We are thrilled to partner with Macy’s and NRPA for ‘Heart Your Park’ this spring,” said Genesee County Parks Director, Amy McMillan. “Through this wonderful program and donations by Macy’s customers, we are excited about the increased awareness and additional funding for For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum. This park is a great asset to the community, and we greatly appreciate Macy’s support.”
“Heart Your Park” is part of Macy’s “Secret Garden” spring campaign that will come to life at Macy’s stores and on with an infusion of garden-inspired merchandise, special promotions and events. For more information on “Secret Garden,” visit For a full list of the parks benefiting from Macy’s “Heart Your Park,” visit

Residents urged to complete Citizen Survey and help commissioners plan for the future of the Genesee County Parks

Flint, MI, November 25, 2013 -- The Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission is conducting a Citizen Survey over the next few weeks that will help establish priorities for improvements to the county parks and their facilities and programs.  And Parks Director Amy M. McMillan says they hope to hear from a sizeable number of Genesee County residents.

“This survey is part of a long-range Community Park, Recreation, Open Space and Greenway Plan to establish priorities for the future of the Parks, so we’re hoping for a huge response from residents,” says McMillan. “This is an opportunity to give us your opinion! The 10 to 15 minutes that residents invest to complete the survey will help the Commission make decisions that will enrich the future of our county and positively affect the lives of all of us who live here.”

Surveys were sent by mail to a number of randomly selected Genesee County residents. Residents who did not receive the survey in the mail are encouraged to go to and complete the survey online.

Those who received the survey in the mail are asked to complete the paper version and send it back within two weeks or go to the website above and complete the survey there.

McMillan stresses that funds for this survey were provided by a grant. Leisure Vision/ETC Institute, an independent consulting company will administer this survey and compile the results.

For more information, contact McMillan at the Parks office at 810-249-3812 or by e-mail at

Come walk with us and celebrate Sara!

Trustees and staff of the Ruth Mott Foundation invite you to participate in Thanks for Giving, a walk to honor the foundation’s president Sara E. Ríos who was recently diagnosed with ALS. This event is our way of thanking Sara for a lifetime of working to improve the lives of underserved people around the world and for her leadership, insight and vision in support of efforts to build community vitality in Flint and Genesee County.

The 1.5 mile event will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Applewood Estate, 1400 East Kearsley Street in Flint. Onsite registration begins at 12:30 p.m. The walk starts at 1 p.m. Music and refreshments will follow at 2 p.m. Walkers and runners are welcome, and the fully paved route is ideal for those pushing strollers or using a walker or wheelchair.

The walk will raise both money and awareness of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Funds raised will benefit the ALS Association Michigan Chapter, which is part of the only national non-profit organization that pioneers research, provides patient care, advocates better policies, encourages public education and provides community services for ALS patients and their families.

Before joining the Ruth Mott Foundation, Sara was director of the Human Rights, Equality and Justice Unit at the Ford Foundation in New York. She also served as legal director of LatinoJustice PRLDEF and was honored by them in 2012 with a Latina Trailblazer award. She has received much recognition for her decades of work, including the CHIRAPAQ award for promoting funding of Peruvian indigenous women's issues.

Please join us in honoring Sara at this fun event!  Our goal is to raise $25,000, and we hope you’ll help us reach it. If you can’t attend but want to show your support, follow the link to make a donation. Click here to register and/or to donate!

Questions? Call or send an e-mail to Denise Holaly at the Ruth Mott Foundation. She can be reached at 810-233-0170 and

Spotlight: Genesee County Parks and Recreation Comission

September 25, 2013-

The Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission announces the 2013 Deer Management Archery Hunt to be held from November 1 through 8, 2013. Changes to this year’s hunt of “Earn a Buck” will require hunters to harvest an antlerless deer, before being allowed to harvest a buck. This change should thin the large deer population in the designated area. Hunters will have approximately a ten acre plot to hunt. 80 lucky hunters will be allowed to hunt the year.

The Lottery will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM, at E. A. Cummings Event Center 6130 E. Mt Morris Road, Genesee Township. Registration for the lottery starts at 11:00 AM.

To enter the Lottery, hunters must have valid identification along with the proper hunting license on the day of the drawing. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by the date of the hunt to hunt alone. Youths, age 10-16 years, may hunt with an adult. Applicants must register for the Lottery in person and be present to win. Cost to enter the lottery will be only $5.00 and additional $5.00 if the hunter wins a hunting site.

Hunting is open to Genesee County residents only.
