Colwell Opera House

The plays presented at Crossroads Village this summer were chosen to represent theatre from the Village's historical era.  The ever popular "The Importance of Being Earnest" was first presented in 1895 and "The Music Man Jr." although not written at the time, also recalls that era as well. The melodramas "Double Crossed at Crossroads Village" was specially written for Crossroads Village and is representative of a popular form of theatre that was truly "American."

Huckleberry Radio Hour

Live, From the Colwell Opera House at Genesee County Park’s Crossroads Village, Michigan…It’s “The Huckleberry Radio Hour”, the first live radio show produced in mid-Michigan in a generation.

“The Huckleberry Radio Hour” is a throwback to those old radio days with a lot of today. Each show features Michigan’s Troubadour, Neil Woodward, a man who has entertained thousands over the years with his fiddle and stories. The host and producer of the “Huckleberry Radio Hour” is well known, local broadcaster Michael J. Thorp.

The “Huckleberry Radio Hour” will have a special guest artist on each show.

These live radio events will air throughout the summer, Every “Huckleberry Radio Hour” will begin at 7PM and be heard on Flint’s WFNT Radio 1470AM, and will be heard worldwide on the internet.

Michael J. Thorp, who is producing as well as hosting the show said, “when you think of the “Huckleberry Radio Hour”, think of a combination of those classic radio shows, “The Grand Ole Opry” and “A Prairie Home Companion.” “If you don’t have memories of those old radio days, “The Huckleberry Radio Hour” will give you some.”

The music, the commercials, even the sound effects will all be performed live as part of the production. Veteran local actor and director Jon Coggins joins the cast as the Foley Artist. That means he will create, live, all of the sound effects used on the show.

The “Huckleberry Radio Hour will also feature its own soap opera, “As the Village Turns.” It will look at the trials and tribulations of the residents of historic Crossroads Village, Michigan. There will be story telling and lots of music and fun in a jam packed hour of live entertainment all on your radio and all live start to finish.

Since the “Huckleberry Radio Hour is a “Live” radio show, the studio audience will play an important role. As Michael J. Thorp says, “The audience is an essential part of the show”. “Without their response, it’s not “Live” radio.”
